Q:  How does the Room in a Box Program work?  Boxes are no longer being accepted.  Thank you.

A:  The Room in a Box program is simple.  Anyone wishing to help the program needs only to find the "list" for the box they would like to provide for someone in High River.   That person then fills a storage tote box with new items from the "list" for that room. Once all the items have been purchased, tape the list to the top of the box and deliver to any of the drop locations in Calgary or Airdrie.

Once the box has been received at the storage site, the boxes are checked to make sure that all the items are in the box and that all the items are new.  Boxes with missing or used items are pulled from the floor until new items can be purchased to place into the box.  Once the box has been approved, it is able to be handed out to a family in need.  Families must first register with Room in a Box in order to obtain boxes.  The boxes are picked up by the family at a pre-determined time.

Q:  How do I get a Room in a Box?

A:  In order to recieve boxes from the Room in a Box program, you must meet two requirements.  1) Be a flood victim residing in High River at the time of the flood, and 2) register with Room in a Box.   To register, please email: roominabox.hr@gmail.com, or click the icon below, print and fill out the form and send it back to me via email.  Please note: I do not have ANY furniture items, that includes beds.  Sorry.

Q:  Why is Room in a Box only for High River?

A:  I chose High River because it was the most devastated area and it is also where my cousin lived.  I wanted to help to not only rebuild her home, but her entire community.  I wish I could open the doors for any and all in need of boxes to receive them, but I can't.  As the person who is collecting these boxes for flood victims, I feel the huge responsiblity to make sure that these boxes get into the hands of the people that they were intended for.  We all know that there are plenty of people out there who will try to take advantage of such a program, and I was determined not to let that happen.

Q:  Why only new items?

A:  Originally I asked people to donate their "gently used" items for these boxes.  What a mistake that was!  I wish I had taken pictures of the items that people passed off as being "gently used".  I spend many hours in tears in my garage when I saw some the "donations" that came in.   Room in a Box became the new dumping ground for some of the most disgusting items such as:  drooled on pillows, torn and stained bedding, sticky tupperware, broken and chipped dishes, pots with burned food still stuck on them, frying pans scratched beyond recognition and other such nasty items.  As such, I was forced to asked for only new items.  The personal cost to our family to go out and purchase all the items needed to replace the nasty ones received was an expensive lesson indeed.
